I love food. I love to cook. I love to eat.
I had worried about not having much of an appetite and losing weight. I'm not very overweight so losing 10 lbs wouldn't hurt but 20 or over and I'll be a stick woman. I purposely put on a few pounds before I started. You know, I'll have 2 of those instead of one, eat big before bed, stuff like that.
I didn't know that I didn't need to worry. Even nauseas I can eat. Those extra 15 pounds have brought friends. Those friends are starting to get bored. It will soon be one huge party on my hips. Even BH is cursing his wardrobe.
I need to eat healthier. Right now anything goes. If I feel rotten I'll eat a whole 1/2 gallon of ice cream (mocha almond fudge thanks) in a day and a half. Yes it does make me feel better.
I have chemo tummy so some things just digest better than others. I get what I call the "Ball". It feels like a huge ball in my esophagus. Like food won't go down. It does though. Then it feels like once it gets past the ball my tummy can't figure out what to do with it. Some meals just make me feel uncomfortable.
Some do's and don't's
Do: Dairy! Anykind any flavor. Cottage cheese, cream cheese, yogurt, hard cheese sliced, diced and shredded. Soft cheeses over crackers, or not. It's all good. Except kefir, I don't like kefir. It's a texture thing.
Don't: Number one don't is tomatoes. I so love tomatoes and just about everything I love has them. Spagetti, pizza, salsa. Sometimes I just suffer through the ball for some pizza. I've also noticed that highly acidic foods zing my mouth.
Do: Potatoe! I low carbed for years and haven't touched a potatoe in anyform for a long time. Now, they are the bomb. Fried, mashed, baked, twice baked, it's all good, all the time, everyday.
Don't: Alcohol. Beer, wine, whatever. It burns and upsets the ball. I shouldn't have anything anyway but I was told I could have a glass or two in moderation. But no, I can't.
Do: Bread, all kinds, crackers, muffins, cakes, bisquits. Lots of butter. They go down nice.
Don't: Cabbage! I don't really like cabbage. I love brussel sprouts which I call tiny cabbage. I will not touch cole slaw. Sauerkraut, NO! Nasty, pickled cabbage. I will say that I make the best german sauerkraut that my friends/family have ever eaten. I'll take their word for it, I won't taste it. It is almost an all day cooking event that stinks up your house but if you love the stuff I post the recipe.
Do: All meats, chicken, beef, pork, tuna. Yum! All good. Except for liver, never liked it, I'm not starting now. However I do like liverwurst and german liver pate. It's a mystery.
Don't: Eggplant. I want to like it but just can't seem to aquire the taste for it.
So here's the plan and problem.
BH is a Low Fatter (LF), I am a Low Carber (LC). Cooking for both is possible but takes a little more planning.
Problem #1: Bread. This includes all manner of crackers. BH loves it and we have loaves of many colors at all times. I will cut down my bread consumption, immediately. He may not. Prob wont. I'm sure he wont.
Problem #2: Sweets. I was a huge sweet eater before. Now just certain things taste good. Most candy is out, no desire. Sweet breads like donuts, cinn rolls, sweet breads, IN. And of course ice cream. I can take or leave a frosted cake. But I know I'll loose weight if I cut out the sugar. I have a number of sugar free deserts that we both can enjoy.
Problem #3: Rice/pasta I love you. I want you. I cannot have you. Dang.
If I cut the bread, pasta and sweets out I should lose a little. It just seems that all those carby things taste good and go down nice. However If I don't cut it out I'll have 50 lbs to lose when I'm done with chemo.
Health update:
I had my 4th treatment yesterday and I'm a little nervous about posting how well I felt last night and today. It could change at any minute, but for now, I'll enjoy feeling good.

Food sounds so good right now, Im doing the low carb thing and finding lack of variety is getting me down. Im so glad you feel good!
The "ball" and the no tomatoes sounds like heartburn/acid reflux. I had that BAD when I was pregnant with Emma. Can they give anything? I was on Zantac and it worked well.
Tiffany,
I low carbed for years. Once I got my menue down I was good. It is tricky at first. I found low carbing to be a great thing. Easy to do, I lost weight, I didnt feel hungry and I could eat a lot of food. Best of all once I lost my weight (I didnt have a whole lot to lose) I kept it off by avoiding very bad carbs. It doesnt work for everyone so dont be discouraged.
AM,
The ball does turn into heartburn acid/reflux sometimes and Zantac or prilosec work fine and I can take them. I have been taking a natural probiotic (acidophilus etc) that helps restore the friendly floa in my bod. I think if I can control my symptoms with things that restore what's being distroyed I'll be better off rather than taking another chemical. However I am only willing to be so miserable so I will take another drug if I'll feel better.
Yay for ice cream!
