*THANKFUL* five

I am Thankful for my parents.

I still have them. Both of them. They are in their 70's now God bless them and married to each other after all these 47 years.

They are in very good health for their age. They don't have any diseases like diabetes. Or cancer, like their goofy daughter. They have old aches and pains I'm sure but they don't complain. They travel whenever they can.

They are good people, immigrants, he from Germany and she from Canada. They are old fashioned, I like to say they are from the Old Country. Where papa comes home from a hard day and momma's been home all day acookin and acleanin. She waits on him hand and foot. They are decent hard working people. I love them very much.

I pray they have many more years ahead of them.

Did you know any of your great-grandparents? All four of my great-grannies were alive when I was born and I met them all. Granted I can only remember one, but knowing I once burbled at them and touched their papery cheeks makes me feel a little more atune to life long before I was ever a thought.

Thankful indeed.

No I didn't. I knew my mothers parents. I did not know them well as we lived 3000 miles away. Nanny visited often so I knew her.

My fathers parents have never left Germany. I never met them and did not have any contact at all with them.

For the most part I grew up without grandparents. Aunts, uncles or cousins for that matter. I do have contact with them (mothers side) with visits, calls, letters etc.

I almost know what you mean -- I grew up in Canada while everyone else in my family -- aunts, uncles, cousins, the lot -- was in the UK. In a weird way, if I lived here when I was growing up I'd never appreciate knowing them like I do now.

All the same, I did miss that whole 'Going to Grandma's house that all my friends got to enjoy.

Have you gone to Germany since?
